Interview with Ian Newton, Managing Director of Talon

Interview with Ian Newton, Managing Director of Talon

To celebrate the launch of our brand new website, we decided to interview our Managing Director, Ian Newton, on the new website, achievements, challenges and the future of Talon.

What do you think of the new website?

It’s got a new contemporary feel and really easy to navigate. I love the ‘how to’ video section.

How did you end up working for Talon?

I love British manufacturing and having previously run 3 other UK businesses, I was attracted by the fact that the whole operation (sales/finance/marketing AND manufacturing) was on the site in Kent. Talon’s commitment to quality is 1st class and the range is massive, definitely ‘more than just a pipe clip’, so lots of opportunities for growth.

What's been the biggest challenge in your time at Talon?

Raw material costs have been subject to continued increases (every year!) and whilst the team at Talon have done a great job delivering more operational efficiencies, outside factors are a constant challenge.

What is one key thing you have learned in your time at Talon so far?

How passionate plumbers are about pipe clips! Most of our photography in our catalogue is from ‘live’ installs from the plumbers! Their interaction with Talon on social media is brilliant.

What do you love most about working at Talon?

The energy levels from the team are brilliant - constantly challenging us to do things better.

What's the achievement you are most proud of since working at Talon?

I’m very excited about our main product launch next year. Our New EZ ‘Joist’ Clip will really help our customers on their difficult installs.

How important is company culture at Talon, and what is done to support it?

The main focus is the people. Everything we do is about focussing on our next day delivery service and a target of zero product complaints. Several training initiatives are ongoing, as we believe passionately about continuously improving the business, through the people.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

What spare time! I love the outdoors, mountain biking, fishing and golf. At home, it’s cinema/TV to relax and time with the family (3 children).

If you could give a piece of advice to someone who wants to work for Talon, what would it be?

Be a ‘team’ player. No 1 person can achieve what a team of people can.
